WGA Strike Ends: Writers Overwhelmingly Approve New Agreement with Studios.

 

 

In the latest news from Words In Motion Acting News, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) has overwhelmingly ratified a groundbreaking three-year agreement with studios, successfully ending a prolonged 150-day strike. This significant development marks a major turning point in the entertainment industry.

With an astounding 99% approval rate, Writers Guild of America (WGA) members overwhelmingly voted in favor of this pivotal contract, casting 8,435 “yes” votes against a mere 90 “no” votes, representing just 1% of the total membership. These resounding numbers reflect a unified decision among the members.

This newly established agreement will be in force from September 25, 2023, through May 1, 2026. It brings a sense of stability and assurance to the industry, with writers and studios coming to a mutually beneficial understanding.

The WGA’s accomplishments are noteworthy, encompassing a range of essential demands. Of particular significance is the provision for a 5% wage increase in the current year, followed by a 4% increment in 2024 and a 3.5% boost in 2025, offering writers a more secure and lucrative career path.

While these positive developments are celebrated, it’s important to note that negotiations are ongoing. On Wednesday, the 11th of October, 2023, bargaining sessions continue, shaping the landscape of the entertainment industry.

However, the actors’ strike, which commenced on July 14, has not yet yielded an agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), the negotiating body for major studios, including Disney (DIS), Warner Bros. (WBD), Amazon (AMZN), Netflix (NFLX), Apple (AAPL), NBCUniversal (CMCSA), Sony (SONY), and Paramount (PARA).

Parallel to the achievements of the writers, SAG-AFTRA remains steadfast in advocating for increased safeguards concerning the role of artificial intelligence in media and entertainment. Their goals include enhanced compensation and elevated streaming residuals, especially as more films and TV shows are directly released on streaming platforms.
